Project Radical Food Landscapes. The Urban Living Experiment
Project description Once a pasture for grazing animals, Peckham’s history has long associations with food production for the City of London. Now a site of consumption, today its spaces are disconnected from the methods and means of food production. Addressing this issue, this project proposes a ‘radical food landscape’ in the centre of Peckham, cultivating awareness around food production through the creation of a public ‘food forest’, above which an experimental urban community both lives with and cultivates food crops. It aims to develop a culture of food for an urban-dwelling community, spatialising and giving voice to otherwise ‘unseen’ production landscapes of the countryside and all centred around a series of ‘growing towers’.
Tutor citation Reesha has created a compelling proposition that addresses an issue needing urgent spatial solutions: to imagine new urban food landscapes that bring the city and the countryside together again. The study involves a rigorous and broad analysis of food production techniques, combining them with public urban spaces and private living environments, producing an intelligent scheme that points to future ways of ‘being’ in the city.
