Several developers are in the running. Derwent London has been nominated by three AJ100 practices – Buckley Gray Yeoman, dMFK Architects and Hopkins Architects. The latter, which is working with Derwent on the 25 Baker Street project, praised the developer for its ‘ongoing dedication to design quality’.
3DReid nominated General Projects, which it says ‘appreciates the value that good design brings and is respectful of the architectural contribution we make’.
Muse has been nominated by Howells, which has worked with the developer for 15 years. The practice praised Muse for its commitment to social value, and for a track record that prioritises ‘community and social benefits to deliver mixed-use, sustainable places in challenging neighbourhoods’.
Three public sector organisations are also in contention.
Haworth Tompkins nominated Be First, the urban regeneration company wholly owned by Barking and Dagenham Council, for its ‘exceptional vision, bold ambition and collaborative approach’. The practice last year completed Industria, the UK’s first multistorey light-industrial project, and is working with Be First on the regeneration of the Gascoigne West estate.
Also in London, HTA Design nominated Enfield Council, which it described as showing ‘ambition in pursuit of better housing for its residents’ through a number of challenging, large-scale regeneration projects.
West Northamptonshire Council was praised by nominator Studio Egret West for its ‘bold and transparent approach’ to early stage public consultation and its openness to innovation.
The shortlist is completed by London school Central Foundation Boys’ School, nominated by Hawkins\Brown. Head teacher Jamie Brownhill has been ‘an inspiring leader and champion of design’, said the practice, which has worked with the comprehensive school for over 12 years.
Last year’s winner was Grosvenor, chosen for its all-round commitment to climate action and CO2 reduction.
The winners of all the AJ100 awards will be announced in June.
